What is SEE@UniGraz?

SEE@UniGraz is a network of researchers and institutions at the University of Graz which focus on Southeast Europe. The focus on Southeastearn Europe is a reflection of geographic proximity, close historical ties to the region and the fact that thousands of students from the region have and are studying at the University.

The university-wide interest in the Southeastern European region is based on a long tradition. After all, Graz with its university is long established as a key place to study from and on Southeastern Europe. Well-known writers, researchers and scholars have studied or taught in Graz, such as nobel-prize winner Ivo Andrić or Ljudevit Gaj, the founder of the 19th century Illyrian movement. The Institute of Slavic Studies, founded in 1871, is one of the oldest in the German language region. This orientation towards Southeastern Europe remains a key feature of the university until today.

Since the university set Southeastern Europe as a strategic Focus in 2000, new research activities and teaching has developed. Thus, the university offers three degree programs focused on the region: LLM in Southeast European Law and European Integration and two Joint Degree Master programs on the History of Southeastern Europe and in Southeast European Studies.

In addition to the Centre for Southeast European Studies, the Centre for Southeast European History within the framework of the Institute of History, the Institute for Slavic Studies and research groups on Southeastern Europe at the Theological and Law faculty conduct research and teaching on the region, as do a number of other institutes.
