BB: Ageing on the Margins: Older Adults’ Testimonies in North Macedonia

This research explores how older adults in North Macedonia perceive and experience ageing amid demographic change. Drawing on biographic interviews, it examines the tensions that shape ageing narratives, between vulnerability and resilience, autonomy and burden, and marginalisation and nostalgia. By emphasising these ambivalences, the study positions ageing as a complex and relational process embedded in broader social transformations.

Ivana Spirovska is a Researcher within the Volkswagen Foundation-funded project “Transforming Anxieties of Ageing in Southeastern Europe.” She specializes in law, education with a focus on English language and literature, and migration studies. Her research has been centred on human rights, ageing, statelessness, citizenship, national/ethnic minorities, and migration studies.
