The teach-in, entitled, “Thinking the Time of The Long Emancipation,” will address concerns of Black freedom, emancipation and the long struggle for decolonization by Black peoples of the Americas. The lecture will draw on Afro-diasporic thinkers and their contributions to critical engagements with the European humanist traditions and the critique of those ideas through the theoretical and conceptual invention of decolonization and decolonial apprehension.

 

Rinaldo Walcott is Professor and Chair of Africana and American Studies at the University of Buffalo. Walcott is a writer and critic and the author of The Long Emancipation: Moving Toward Black Freedom (Duke, 2021); On Property: Policing, Prisons, and the Call for Abolition (Biblioasis, 2021) and has authored numerous scholarly and other essays. He is currently working on two books: A Change Gone Come: Seven Theses on Utopia and Dark Experiments: Black Contemporary Art from 2015-2025 Visualizing Freedom.
