Editor's note

Dear Reader, welcome to the Contemporary Southeastern Europe! This peer-reviewed journal is published as an open-access academic journal, by the Centre for Southeast European Studies. We are firmly committed to the highest standards of academic publishing, including rigorous, double-blind, peer review and making research available, free of charge, to an interested audience. As subscription costs rise and many libraries have to save resources, we are committed to making high quality research available for researchers without cost. Due to the increasing financial restraints on many libraries across Southeastern Europe (the key geographic scope of this journal), this approach is essential in making new research widely available to the academic community.

Contemporary Southeastern Europe is an interdisciplinary journal covering, both, the recent past and the present in Southeastern Europe. As such, we encourage submissions from a variety of disciplines, such as political science, history, law, sociology, economics, cultural studies, gender studies and anthropology, as well as interdisciplinary research. The journal wants to make research from different disciplinary perspectives on Southeastern Europe available to a broad academic audience, without clear disciplinary boundaries. Thus, we encourage authors to write in a manner accessible to different disciplines, and without excessive disciplinary jargon. The geographical scope of the journal is broadly understood to include the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia, and Turkey. The journal especially welcomes research that places these countries in a broader inter- and transnational context. The contemporary focus of our journal is delineated from the fall of communism, until today. Nevertheless, the journal seeks to publish research on historical backgrounds that facilitates the understanding of current events, and the linkages between historical and current developments. Contemporary Southeastern Europe welcomes equally all different schools of thought in social sciences and humanities; supports diversity in analytical approaches; as well as the exploration of well reflected thematic fields, but also of uncharted academic waters in South East European studies. In doing so, the journal hosts empirical analyses, comparative empirical research and social theory conceptualizations linked to societies in Southeastern Europe. In addition to research articles, the journal publishes review essays and studies of current events and recent elections.

The journal also wants to make a contribution by bringing academic publishing into the digital era. Rather than just being the online version of a printed journal, online-only publishing provides for opportunities, thus far, rarely used. We encourage discussion, comments and criticisms of the articles online. We also provide the opportunity for authors to present their main research findings in a brief interview, and to include data, such as tables, multi-media content and further links together with the article itself. We furthermore abandon the publication rhythm of issues. All articles will be published, as soon as they have been peer-reviewed, revised, proofread and formatted. Thus, the common problem of “bottlenecking,” of conventional journals, does not apply to the Contemporary Southeastern Europe.

We are thus, delighted to welcome you as a reader, and contributor to the jour-nal and looking forward to developing this journal with you in the coming years,

Florian Bieber
