The Ukrainian Value Concept has undergone many transformations over the past century. It was due to the formation of Ukrainian statehood and the development of civil society in Ukraine. After gaining independence, the vast majority of Ukrainians professed traditional values of the Soviet era. However, they gradually transformed, while Ukraine was developing as the independent state. In that regard, the revolutions of 2004 and 2014 were of great importance. In particular, the Revolution of Dignity, intensified by the armed conflict in Donbas, actualized the accelerated transformation of Ukrainian society towards European-style values. And, it is absolutely logical that the pro-European system of democratic values has only strengthened with the Russian-Ukrainian War that turned into a large-scale invasion in February 2022. Despite the circumstances, today we can say that Ukrainians overwhelmingly still follow and transmit traditional values. Nevertheless, the population's loyalty to corruption and the patronage-client system of state governance, as well as gender stereotyping, remains high. As a result, the rooting of democratic values is becoming a challenge.
This lecture is discussing what factors influenced the formation of the value system in Ukrainian society. More specifically, we are analysing the modern value paradigm of Ukraine and how it affects the state democratic development.
