The conference and workshop “Tourism and Islands of Memory” is part of an ongoing workshop series and
ini;a;ve on the historical remembrance of islands, focused on the Adria;c and Mediterranean from a
compara;ve perspec;ve. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of tourism in Stari Grad, this year’s
workshop is devoted to tourism.
The workshop invites academics and prac;;oners from mul;disciplinary backgrounds to reflect on tourism
and historical remembrance in the context of islands. Ques;ons of interest pertaining to the history of tourism
and its impact on local communi;es, how tourism can harness and promote historical memory, sustainable
tourism, and heritage, as well as the impact of over-tourism.
The conference and workshop have an exploratory character, and we invite researchers’ work on and from
islands in the Adria;c, Mediterranean, and beyond to reflect on these cases. We are also welcoming
sugges;ons/brainstorming about poten;al projects.
The event will feature academic panels, prac;;oner workshops and a public event. It builds on previous events
on the theme and seeks to establish a con;nuous debate on the topic.

The workshop is jointly organized by the Pharos Interna;onal Ins;tute for Sciences, Art, and Culture and the
Centre for Southeast European Studies of the University of Graz in coopera;on with the University of Rijeka
and the Stari Grad Museum.
